The Success of The Grind (Summer 2015)

Great Mills graduate Duckett hosts speed and agility camp By: Ted Black

In the waning days of his second annual speed and agility camp at Nicolet Park in Lexington Park, John Duckett has watched his 15 to 20 regular participants endure the heat and humidity over the past two months.

Duckett, a Great Mills High School graduate who later played for the University of Virginia, has overseen nearly two dozen campers, ages 5 to 29, three days per week from June 1 through Aug. 6. Along the way his students and potential proteges, young and old, have honed their footwork and agility to become more proficient at any number of sports, including football, basketball, baseball and soccer.

“It’s been great watching these guys progress all summer,” Duckett said. “When I was younger we didn’t have agility training, so when I got to college I was a step behind a lot of the other athletes. These drills are similar to the ones they run in [NCAA] Division I college practices. That’s what I want these kids to be prepared for.”

Ray McLeod, a 2014 Great Mills graduate who played the second half of the 2014-15 men’s basketball season at Penn State-Harrisburg (Pa.), actually plans to bypass the upcoming school year. But when he returns to school for the 2016-17 season, McLeod wants to be in peak shape and convince his coaches he is ready for a return. He also videotapes each session and posts them on a personal website for anyone to view.

“This whole summer has been an inspiration for me,” McLeod said. “It inspired me to work hard to get in shape and stay mentally and physically ready for next season. It’s inspiring to watch these younger kids. They look up to me and that’s important because it pushes me to work harder. You can’t get anything in life unless you work for it.”

Nazar Scott, a rising senior at Great Mills, arrived at the camps with plenty of speed, but he wanted to hone his agility skills before the upcoming high school basketball season.

Scott, who did not play basketball for the school in his previous three years, would like to play this winter and believes that his natural speed and the combination of the agility training he received from Duckett’s camp, can enable him to make the squad.

“I’ve always been able to run very fast,” Scott said. “But I never understood the stopping and cutting that goes into basketball. Now I can go up and down the court quickly and I can stop on a dime. I really like watching the younger kids. They have to run the same drills that I do every day and they’re good at them.”

Pierre Harris, a 2004 Great Mills graduate, was the senior member of the campers at 29. While McLeod and Scott are looking to enhance their speed and agility for their athletic careers, Harris wanted to improve his conditioning for the stage as a rap artist who performs at local clubs twice each month as “Petey Montana.”

“It takes a lot of work to move around the stage when you’re performing,” Harris said. “These workouts have been great for me. They help me stay in shape and work on my footwork. It’s also great working with these younger kids. Some of them don’t have a father figure at home to look up to, so that’s inspirational for me to watch them run through these same drills.”

Juwaun Queen, a rising seventh-grader at Leonardtown Middle School, has also endured the camps from the outset two months ago. Queen would like to play basketball and football in high school and viewed the camps as very beneficial.

“These workouts really helped me all summer,” Queen said. “I learned a lot about how to move my feet and make quicker cuts. [Duckett] was a great coach all summer. He really understands what it takes to play at the next level.”

T D Jakes Sermon Seeds Of Greatness

Listen to TD Jakes and understand how he breaks down Greatness in seed form.

Whatever God called you to be, you are. But now your in seed form.
As you read this today "Take Time To Grow in Greatness"!!!

Witness Greatness...

Picture
In life when you want to achieve your dream and become successful everyday you wake up, you have to live to become the person you want to be. In chasing your dream make sure you "Make Them Witness". Let the people know your Greatness don't just say it "be it".

Good may not be good enough...

Picture

There many good people in the world. But why settle for good? When you can have Greatness, be Greatness, and live Greatness. Imagine how your life would be and how much more you would accomplish if you strived for Greatness. Every person in the world who tapped into their Greatness and never gave up on their dream found away to make it happen. Sometimes in life being good just won’t get you far but if you push towards Greatness you’ll succeed beyond all limitations!!!

Make it Happen!!!

Picture
  • Many times in life you wait for other people to give you your dream. You Have to Make it happen, Never Quit, and have Faith.
  • March 10th 2012 was the day me and my teammates plan to go to Comcast and win the State tittle. But as a team we didn't achieve it because some quit, and some didn't have faith. But in life to be successful everyone has to be on same page as 1 to Make it happen, never quit, and have Faith.

No ONE HAS THE RIGHT!!!

Picture
Dreams are a blessing created in the mind and should be pursued and flourished. In high school I had to take a look in the mirror and tell myself that "No one has the right to tell me I'm not going to make it." The life style of pursing a dream all starts in the mind and if you put your mind to it, you will succeed. But in the process of reaching success and your dreams, you have haters come across your path and try to get in your mind with negative thought. So I tell you think positive and chasing your dream will be a mind set and nothing will stop you. (No one has the RIGHT!!!)
